A Recap Of Spring 2015 Haute Couture Shows
A Recap Of Spring 2015 Haute Couture Shows
The Spring 2015 haute couture shows took place in Paris this week. I’ve been following them mainly because couture shows set the stage for upcoming ready to wear shows and trends which eventually trickle down to mass retailers and what we see in stores.
Not every design house can do a haute couture collection, there are requirements you have to adhere to set forth by the “Federation Francaise de la Couture” in Paris. Here are the three requirements:
- The design house must accept private clients and do made-to-measure clothing and personal fittings.
- They must show two couture collections a year, in January and July.
- The design house has to have an atelier or design studio in Paris and employ more than 20 people.
There are not many design houses that do haute couture and the main reason is the fact that there is not much profit in doing them. The shows and the “one of a kind clothes” are very costly to make and the clients who can afford to buy them are a very small percentage of the world population. They are mostly put together as a long term investment and publicity for a designer’s profile which helps in sales for their ready to wear, cosmetics, perfume and accessories collections.
Normally you see a lot of beautiful dresses and evening gowns at these shows. This is understandable as the clients who are willing to pay around $10,000.00 for a gown would like to wear them to very special occasions and black tie parties. However there are some designers that always do beautiful jackets and coats as well and that is what I have highlighted for you here.
Before moving on to my favorites, I wanted to mention the Jean Paul Gautier’s show in particular because I was very impressed that he used a refreshingly diverse cast of models of various ages and shapes. He has done this before but it is always encouraging when you see designers using real women on the runway. You can see some of the pictures at the end.
I hope you enjoy my picks and let me know which ones are your favorites.
