Our Trip To Italy Part Two Amalfi Positano And Ravello

Our Trip To Italy Part Two Amalfi Positano and Ravello

Today I am sharing with you the second part of our trip to Italy’s Amalfi Coast which includes the towns of Amalfi, Positano, Ravello and a cute little town called Atrani.

After 4 days on the island of Capri it was time to move on to the Amalfi coast for the rest of out trip. The ferry from Capri to Amalfi is only about an hour.ย  We had made the decision to stay for five nights in Amalfi as our base and to take day trips up and down the coast to the different towns.ย  At the time we were booking the trip, we wanted to make Positano our base but we could not find a hotel that had availability that we liked.ย  Positano is a very popular destination so if you are planning to visit and stay there make sure to book the hotel months in advance.

We stayed at Belvedere Hotel in Amalfi which was very nice.ย  The best part about it was the pool and the view which were amazing.ย  The bad part was that it was quite a way from the Amalfi city center and you had to take the bus or taxi every time you wanted to go to dinner outside the hotel, unlike Capri where our hotel was walking distance to the city center.

As soon as you arrive in Amalfi you see the Piazza del Duomo where the beautiful Catherdral of St Andrew is located.ย  The Duomo as it is usually referred to in town, is the religious, historic and cultural heart of Amalfi. This area is filled with restaurants, cafes and shops and it is where all the buses and ferries come and go out to the neighboring towns. We enjoyed visiting inside the Cathedral then walking around the shops and having dinner in one of the cute restaurants.

On the day we went to Positano, we once again took the ferry which is a half an hour ride . You can also take the bus, but I highly recommend taking the ferry as the buses get super busy and the ferry is much more comfortable.ย  Positano is such a picturesque town with beautiful colors and views just like you see in post cards.

The town of Positano itself is perched on an enclave on the face of a hill and winds down towards the waters of the Amalfi Coast.ย  There are alot of stairs to climb up and down and so many cute narrow streets all over the place, so have your comfortable walking shoes on when visiting. We walked around town and visited one of the most beautiful Hotels there โ€œLe Sirenuseโ€ where we had drinks next door to the hotel at their famous new cool bar called Francoโ€™s.ย  We then walked back down to the beach to finish the day by having dinner at another famous spot, the โ€œChez Blackโ€ restaurant which is an institution in Positano and has been open on the sea front here since 1949.ย  You will see lots of photos of celebrities on their wall that have dined there in the past and the owners were still hard at work the night we were there – absolutley amazing.

When we were in Capri, unfortunately we could not visit the Grotto Azurra or Blue Grotto because it was closed every day due to rough seas.ย  We did, however visit the Grotto Smeraldo on the Amalfi coast which is in the Conca Dei Marini and was discovered in 1932. It is also flooded inside with a brilliant blue or emerald light and the color of the light in the cave is determined by the unique lighting conditions in that particular cave.ย  They have boat rides that take you through the cave with the driver giving you an introduction about the history and sometimes they will burst into song like ours did which was quite fun.ย  It is absolutely beautiful inside and for me it was worth seeing. ย Up above the Grotto on the roadside there is a beautiful ceramic shop and cafe were we grabbed a coffee and looked at all the beautiful ceramics and jewelry, where I bought two beautiful bracelets.

On our last full day we made our way up to Ravello, but before getting there we stopped by a small town called Atrani which is the smallest town in the whole of Southern Italy and is really cute and charming.ย  We stopped there to have lunch at another picturesque restaurant with great views by the ocean and again wonderful food.ย  After lunch the server at the cafe called a taxi for us to go up to Ravello which is a beautiful town sitting high in the hills above Amalfi and in my opinion it is a โ€œmust seeโ€ if you are visiting Amalfi Coast.

We walked all around enjoying the wonderful experince of this town. The cute streets all meander around the town and use the central piazza as the main focal point as usual. The maim church called Duomo Di Ravello is also located here along with many cafes and restaurants. ย Another special place we visited here is the Villa Rufolo and the gorgeous Rufolo gardens that surround it.ย  We had an amazing dinner with unbelievable views in Ravello, it was a great way to spend our last night in Amalfi Coast and unfortunately we had to fly back to the US the next day from Naples so we made it a night to remember.

I had the mostย amazing time on this trip and I saw the most beautiful places and sights of my life.ย  I highly recommend everyone to try and visit the Amalfi Coast in their life time as it is a โ€œmust seeโ€ place – Now a very special place for me as well.

Stunning pictures! You look beautiful, as always. My daughter will be getting married in Rome next fall (so exciting!). It will be my first trip to Italy and I am having a hard time narrowing down which cities to visit while we’re there. What are your favorite, must-see places? I’d love to see your packing list for a trip like this!

      Hi Kim,
How exciting! A wedding in Roma sounds beautiful. I have been to Rome twice, once in December right before Christmas which was really beautiful. We went to Rome and Venic which is a “must see”, it was cold of course but I loved it. Second time was during summer which was very hot and we visited Naples and Pompei but they were both day trips and we were also going to London. Florence is also really beautiful and a “must see” city. As far as packing, I will be honest with you that I am a bit of an over packer but for fall you should take jackets and shawls for sure as it will be cooler. You can send me an email directly if you have any specific questions to [email protected] and I will be happy to answer as best as I can. Thank you so much for stopping by ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Nora,

Thank you once again for all the great information and details! How did you travel to each city from your hotel – public transport or did you rent a car?

Just like Kim suggested I would love to see your packing list as I always over pack and on a previous trip to Italy I definitely over packed and had to lug my luggage on and off of trains. ๐Ÿ™‚ Since this trip you just took involved walking through the piazza with luggage to get to your hotel I would be most interested to see your packing list. You should blog your travel packing lists for different locations and seasons…..just an idea for the future. Maybe you can get some travel sponsors and take even more trips! ๐Ÿ™‚

      Hi Julie,
We took the ferry to Positano and a taxi from Atrani to Ravello. Atrani was walking distance from Amalfi. There are also buses like I mentioned but they get over packed with people and with the roads there I didn’t want to be standing in a bus.
As for my packing list, I will try and work on something for the next trip, but just like you I am an over packer and I am still learning myself how to pack efficiently. I do have to mention though that last year I bought a suit case that has four wheels and I absolutly LOVE it. Before I had such a hard time pulling my suit case and my husband always had to help but with this suit case it didn’t matter how heavy it was I just rolled it next to me as we were walking.
I wish I would get a travel sponsor lol, as I love traveling. Thank you so much for stopping by and reading the blog and your lovely comment.

I loved this post, my husband and I visited Ravello and surrounds 10 years ago. We stayed in Ravello for 3 or 4 nights. We fell in love with the place. An elderly French couple recommended it to us earlier in our trip.
Your photos bring back many memories. I had forgotten about those wonderful gardens and I’m sure we ate in that restaurant in your photos..
I do recall many weddings there, it is the place to marry apparently.
